A couple years ago, I knew I wanted to make the shift to using a natural deodorant. There’s plenty of info out there on why regular deodorants can be harmful, so I won’t take your time getting into all of that! (parabens and aluminum are some of the top offenders in traditional antiperspirants/deodorants if you’ve never heard this before and want to do some research) But switching to a safe, natural deodorant was something that had been on my radar for quite a while.
I set about looking for a natural deodorant by doing what I usually do when I’m looking for a new product… reading reviews on Amazon. :) After LOTS of trial and error, I finally found one I love, and I also discovered a few secrets to using natural deodorants along the way.
5 Secrets to Using Natural Deodorants
#1: Natural deodorants are just that… DEODORANTS. They are not antiperspirants.
This is something good to know up front if you’re thinking about making the switch. :) Regular deodorants rely on aluminum-based ingredients to stop you from sweating. Because aluminum is such a controversial (most might argue downright harmful) ingredient, natural deodorants do not contain it. As a result, you might sweat (gasp!). But before you throw in the towel in looking for a natural deodorant based on this fact alone, I want to tell you that you might be amazed at how little your armpits actually sweat during the day! And even better, natural deodorants can even keep your armpits fresher than regular deodorant, even after sweating. Read on. :)
#2: Natural deodorants may keep your armpits fresher longer!
Sure, if you go to the gym for a mega-workout or are sitting out in 95 degree weather for a while, you will probably sweat. But here is something else interesting… once you find a natural deodorant that works for you, even if your armpits sweat, they do not stink. I’ve talked to several friends about this, and they agree it’s true!
Even if I work up a sweat, my armpits actually have no smell at then end of the day when I’m using a good natural deodorant. I know that sounds crazy, but it’s true! With a regular deodorant… well, you probably know that not-so-fresh smell at the end of the day that happens if you’ve been sweating. Like you-need-to-hop-in-the-shower-before-bed kind of thing, ya know?! I’m so sorry if this is TMI, ha!!!
#3: Everyone’s armpits are different. It may take some trial and error to find the one that works for you!
We all know everyone’s body chemistry is different, but I think this is very apparent when looking for a natural deodorant! There are people who swear by crystal deodorant, their own homemade deodorant, or a even specific brand. Some natural deodorants have cult-like followings!! But just because you try a certain deodorant that everyone swears works, and it doesn’t work for you, don’t give up. Everyone’s chemistry is different, so try a few more. Just because you don’t find one on the first try doesn’t mean there’s not one that will work great.
Also keep in mind that there are varying amounts of baking soda in different deodorants, and although it’s extremely effective at preventing odor, this can be an irritating ingredient to the sensitive skin in your pits. Many companies have a ‘gentle’ version of their deodorant that you may look at trying if the regular version is too irritating. Also read point #5 below!
#4: Exfoliate so your natural deodorant doesn’t stop working.
This is my biggest tip for using natural deodorants!! One thing I noticed when I was initially reading reviews on natural deodorants was that they would work great in the beginning, but then they would stop working. I couldn’t figure out why I saw so many people saying the same thing, but then it happened to me, too!
Then I read a review where someone was talking about this, and she said you have to exfoliate your armpits if you want your natural deodorant to keep working. BINGO!
Ever since I started doing this, I have not had the problem where my deodorant suddenly stops working. I don’t know why this is more of an issue with a natural deodorant versus a traditional deodorant. All I know is that as long as I use something as simple as a washcloth to exfoliate my armpits every couple of days, my deodorant keeps on working!
#5: Occasionally you may need a ‘barrier’ between your skin and your natural deodorant.
The deodorants that work best for me contain baking soda, but this can occasionally be an irritating ingredient especially when coupled with shaving and exfoliating. I don’t typically have a problem with irritation, but every once in a while my skin will start to sting a little. This is where my ‘barrier’ product comes in, something I put on before my natural deodorant.
My barrier happens to be another natural deodorant. This deodorant does NOT contain baking soda (which is probably why it doesn’t work great for me on its own), but it DOES contain skin-soothing ingredients. If I’m starting to feel a little irritated, I put on my ‘barrier deodorant’ first (which does NOT contain baking soda), then my favorite natural deodorant (WITH baking soda), and my armpits are happy. :) You may consider trying something like coconut oil as a barrier first if you are experiencing any irritation.
If I use my barrier for just a day or two, my skin is back to normal and no longer sensitive.
Some of my Favorites
Deodorants are so individualized, but my two favorite natural deodorants are Truly’s Natural Deodorant and Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant. Both work amazing for me, typically for a full 24 hours. Love love love these deodorants!
Truly’s – I’ve bought original and Orange Creamsicle before, they both smell about the same! This deodorant actually smells like sugar cookies in my opinion, ha! The regular version contains organic coconut oil, organic powdered sugar (weird, I know! But I think this might be the secret ingredient), baking soda, and beeswax. Super simple, non-toxic ingredients.
Schmidt’s – This is my newer favorite, and it edges out the Truly’s a bit for me because it comes in a STICK! I don’t have to use my fingers!! You can read my full review of Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant here.
As a barrier between the Truly’s/Schmidt’s and my skin if my underarms occasionally get sensitive (see above), I use Young Living’s AromaGuard Meadow Mist Deodorant. This deodorant has a great consistency and really soothes my underarms if they are irritated from shaving, etc. I only have to use this one occasionally.
