Hello there!! Well I’ve waited quite a while before reviewing this product, but after a year of using Beautycounter’s Dew Skin, I can definitely say I LOVE IT!
What is Dew Skin?
Beautycounter’s Dew Skin is a tinted moisturizer that contains SPF 20. If you’ve never used a tinted moisturizer before, it is different than a foundation. It provides extremely sheer coverage, but it still has a bit of color to help even out your complexion. What I love about tinted moisturizer vs foundation is that it blends so seamlessly into the skin!! With foundation, you do have a layer on top of your skin, but tinted moisturizer looks like it IS your skin. This also gives you a little grace when choosing a color… because it is so sheer, the color doesn’t need to be EXACT exact. I wear #2 year round, both when I’m really pale in the winter and when I have a bit more color in the summer. (by the way, for a great sunless tanner I found, check out my Beauty by Earth Sunless Tanner review!)
Why I Love Dew Skin
I have to confess something – when I bought my first bottle of Dew Skin, I did NOT love it. I was so sad. It has won an Allure ‘Best of Beauty Award’, people were raving about it, and I really wanted to love it, too!! But initially I thought it was too greasy and slid off my skin… until I discovered why. Silly me! Dew Skin is a tinted moisturizer, and I was applying it on top of MORE moisturizer!! That was way too much moisture for my skin. No wonder why I thought it was sliding off! Once I used it as my main daytime moisturizer, I really fell in love with it.
I love that the Dew Skin functions as a moisturizer, an SPF, and that it helps to even out my skin a bit. I do use concealer on several areas (under my eyes, around my nose and mouth, etc.), but I love that I don’t have layers of ‘stuff’ on my skin… like a layer of moisturizer, a layer of SPF, and a layer of foundation. The Dew Skin is really an all-in-one. On days I’m home all day, I just use my Dew Skin and a little concealer, I don’t even wear powder. For a more finished feeling if I’m headed out somewhere, I do apply a light layer of loose powder.
Another reason I love it, and equally important, is that Dew Skin is formulated with SAFE ingredients. Beautycounter products are free from 1500 ingredients that they’ve relegated to their ‘Never List’ (you can read more here), so I feel confident that I’m not slathering my skin in ingredients that are harmful to my health. This product has one of the highest safety ratings in the EWG Skin Deep Database, which is super important to me!
Why I love LOVE Dew Skin
Ok, I’m sorry that heading was a little dramatic. 🙈 But I have to share this!! Ever since I’ve had my kids, I’ve been really prone to melasma… that darkening that happens to areas of your skin when you’re in the sun. It just makes your skin look ‘dirty’, like you have these brown patches. They are NOT cute. Obviously one way to avoid this is to stay out of the sun, but when you’re trapped indoors 6 months out of the year, you’re NOT going to stay inside in the summer when it’s finally nice out!!
In years past, I would use at least SPF 30 on my skin, but the melasma was still very much visible by the end of the summer. However, when I switched to Beautycounter’s Sunscreen, which is also SPF 30, it did a great job at keeping the melasma away! Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that it is a physical sunscreen instead of a chemical sunscreen.
I really wanted to have the Dew Skin be my main product in the summer (moisturizer, SPF, sheer coverage) versus just their sunscreen, but I was a little worried the Dew Skin was only SPF 20, compared to their SPF 30 sunscreen. However, I decided since the sunscreen worked so well that maybe the Dew Skin would, too. One day I got brave and tried it, and I’ve been impressed ever since! After 2 summers of using this, I can confidently say the SPF in the Dew Skin has kept the sun’s rays at bay better than anything else I have used in years past!! This is huge for me and very exciting, so it’s something I wanted to share. It WORKS!! :) (Like I mentioned, their regular sunscreen does a great job, too, but I prefer a tinted moisturizer for everyday wear.)
Since I’ve been using Dew Skin, I cannot tell you the dramatic difference in my skin when going outside! I’d say previously, on a melasma scale of 1-10, my skin would probably get to 6-7, even with SPF, by the end of the summer. With the Dew Skin, it maybe gets to a 1-2, even after being in the sun for long periods of time!! This is HUGE for me!
Dew Skin Tips
Like I mentioned, I just apply the Dew Skin on my freshly washed skin in the morning, no other moisturizer necessary. If your skin is on the dry side, of course you can apply moisturizer beforehand. After applying Dew Skin, I find it helpful to wait several minutes before applying concealer or powder. I think this helps the Dew Skin ‘dry’ and let the moisturizer really sink in. Plus I want the SPF to stay put and do it’s job, so I let it sit before I start applying concealer or any other makeup (powder, etc.) to my skin!
