Well hello there! I’m really excited to tell you about this product I recently found! If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, you already know I purchased and was testing out this Beauty by Earth Self Tanner to review. Well I’m happy to say it’s a winner!
Here is my video review for those of you who don’t like to read… or readers can keep reading below :)
A Little Background
If you’ve never used a self tanner before, unless it also contains bronzer, it typically looks like a regular, plain, white lotion.
Self tanners contain an ingredient, DHA, that reacts with the outer layers of skin, producing a darker color after a few hours. The Beauty by Earth Self Tanner is NOT a colored lotion or a bronzer that you rub on your skin, it is a lotion that makes your skin itself turn a darker shade.
I have used self tanners in the past, but it’s been several years. I know many of the ingredients, like in all of our cosmetics, can be harmful – parabens, pthalates, fragrance, etc. etc. So this time around I wanted to find one with safe ingredients.
I used the Skin Deep database to search, and this Beauty by Earth Self Tanner had one of the best safety ratings for self tanners (see its safety rating here). It also has great reviews on Amazon, which is where I ultimately purchased it from! If you don’t know how to use the Skin Deep database to find safe products, please watch my video here – it makes choosing safer products SO much easier!
My Review of the Beauty by Earth Self Tanner
In short, I love this product! It works as well as any other self tanner, and the ingredients are clean! It’s definitely a winning product in my book.
The directions on the back of the bottle read:
For best and lasting results, gently exfoliate the skin before application. Apply self tanner evenly to the desired area, applying a thin layer. When applying to areas with loose skin, such as elbows and knees, apply less product. Wash hands immediately after application to avoid discoloration. Avoid direct contact with eyes. If desired coloration is not reached within 6 hours, reapply the following day. To maintain color, apply every 4-7 days or as needed.
My Experience and Tips
Being cooped up inside all winter is one of the downsides to living in the midwest – by the time March and April roll around, we can start looking a little pale and sickly!! :) Other than on our recent vacation, my skin hasn’t seen the light of day in months, so I primarily used the self-tanner on my face, then blended it down over my neck and chest.
At first I wasn’t sure how dark my skin would turn, so I mixed the self tanner in equal parts with my regular facial moisturizer before spreading it on my face. As a tip – make sure you rub it all the way into your hairline!! You WILL see where you applied, and where you DIDN’T, if you don’t blend well!
Another tip is to make sure you don’t get your skin wet for a good 4 hours after applying – this will cause major streaking and is not pretty! I had applied the self tanner on my arms and the top of my hands one day, and then of course I washed my hands so my palms wouldn’t turn orange. However, the tops of my hands had gotten wet as well when I washed them, and I had a line on the top of my wrist where it had gotten wet. NOT CUTE. Definitely a good tip to remember if you use self tanner. :)
The lotion is a really nice consistency and spreads great. It smells great as well, like coconuts and like you’re at the beach. Now BE WARNED… over time, that nice smell fades and you are left with the not-so-nice smell of the active ingredient in self tanners, which is kind of gross. I don’t think this can be avoided, the active ingredient is just not pleasant smelling. Any of the self tanners I have tried in the past have had the same issue, the smell is just something you have to deal with if you want to use a self tanner! It won’t be like other people will walk by you and think you stink, but the smell will probably get annoying to you, ha!
Because of the water factor and the smell factor, I just make sure I time it right when I’ll be using my self tanner… I know I need 4 hours before getting wet, and I know it will start to smell not-so-pleasant after about 1-2 hours or so. There have been a couple of days where I put it on in the morning and just went about my day, but I honestly cannot stand the smell by the end of the day. I don’t want to put it on before bed, because I don’t want the smell getting on my pillow! So for me, the best time to use it is on the days where I don’t have to be anywhere and can take a shower a few hours later than normal. If I wake up and immediately put it on, then I can wash it off when I shower a few hours later.
This self tanner gives you a really nice glow, maybe a shade darker than your skin. You can build the color, too, if you want to go darker – just use it more than one day in a row. It really evens out my skin tone, so when I use it on my face, I don’t even have to wear foundation. The color lasts me about 4-5 days or so, it just naturally fades over time. I’ve been using this about once a week, and I love it. Also, I have skin that breaks out very easily, but I have been okay with this – no breakouts! I will definitely be using this in the summer months as well, as I like to keep my face out of the sun – wrinkles!!!
All in all, I love the Beauty by Earth Self Tanner. If you’re looking for a safe version of self tanner, I’d say give it a try!
