I don’t know about you, but often times when I hear about a ‘natural’ product or a ‘safer’ version of a product, I am usually skeptical. Many times my mind equates this with a ‘less effective’ product, one that doesn’t perform as well.
And sometimes that is true!! I know I tried many different ‘safe deodorants’ that were not as effective as the regular deodorant I was used to. Sometimes I am willing to compromise a bit on performance if I can eliminate harmful ingredients, but there are some things that are just non-negotiable… like deodorant!! (I have some tips on using a natural deodorant here, since I finally figured that one out!) Sunscreen is another product where I am not willing to compromise performance, at least from a sun-protection standpoint.
Why Using a Safe Sunscreen is Important to Me
Like I mentioned in my last post, sunscreens can be some of the worst products there are when it comes to using chemicals on your body, as they are often loaded with harmful ingredients. You can read more about the trouble with sunscreen chemicals. Common sunscreen ingredients like oxybenzone, octinoxate, and homosalate can disrupt your hormone system, and retinyl palmitate (vitamin A) may trigger damage, possibly cancer. Not to mention possible parabens, pthalates, fragrance, the spray sunscreens that can be inhaled, etc. Yes, using a safe sunscreen on my family is VERY important to me!
For several years I was using a sunscreen that had a great safety rating in the Skin Deep database (i.e. it did not contain harmful ingredients). It worked great in terms of sun protection, but the actual consistency of the sunscreen and overall usability left something to be desired. I had been willing to compromise texture and usability of the sunscreen because it was safe and still kept the sun out. However, my poor kiddos looked like little pale ghosts after I had gotten it all rubbed in, and they hated when I applied it because it pulled their skin! But because it was safe and it kept the sun from burning them while at the pool all day (and I couldn’t find a better alternative), I kept using it.
A Safe Sunscreen that Works!
Fast forward to last summer, and I finally found a sunscreen that I truly love! The consistency is just like ‘regular’ sunscreen we are used to, it has the best possible safety rating in the Skin Deep database, and IT WORKS!! It is Beautycounter’s Protect All Over Sunscreen SPF 30.
In my last post, I talked about using this sunscreen at a water park all day last summer. In the excitement of the day, time got away from me and we had forgotten to reapply until 4pm, after being out in the water all day! Yikes! But not one of us had gotten a sunburn. I knew then that this was a winner, and that I was definitely taking it with us to Mexico!
We just returned from Mexico last weekend, and I wanted to show you that a safe sunscreen really can work as well as ‘regular’ sunscreen! This Beautycounter sunscreen was the only sunscreen we brought, we used it both on face and body. Check out this picture!! My husband put the sunscreen on his face, I had put it on the back of his neck when I was sunscreening his back, but clearly we missed putting sunscreen on the side of his face and his ear!!! You can see exactly where we missed!!
I kept laughing because he was mad he wasn’t getting a tan on the rest of his body because of the sunscreen! So it became kind of a joke while we were there… “I want a tan, but this darn sunscreen won’t let it happen!”
So there you have it… proof that a safe sunscreen CAN work, as evidenced by the the normal white skin around the burn. :)
And just in case you want a little view of our vacation heaven…
Have you ever seen a rainbow around the sun before?!
And my favorite… (no filter either!!)
